Reading and Phonics

 

 

At Millwood we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum for English as a basis for our English teaching. Classes will adapt the teaching methods used to meet these objectives based on the individual needs of the children in their class. We aim for all of our children to develop a love of books and stories regardless of their additional needs. Communication and Spoken language is given a high priority throughout school and this is taught alongside Reading and Writing throughout school.

  

Nursery and Reception children are taught to read through:

  • Sensory stories;
  • Shared reading experiences;
  • Sensory books;
  • Read Write Inc;
  • Letters and Sounds;
  • Oxford Reading Tree;
  • Rigby Star;
  • Collins Big Cat;
  • The use of ICT such as Clicker;
  • POPS;
  • Individual reading programmes which involves: object, picture and word matching activities.

At KS1 and KS2; children are taught to read through:

  • Sensory stories;
  • Shared reading experiences;
  • Sensory books;
  • Read Write Inc;
  • Letters and Sounds;
  • Oxford Reading Tree;
  • Rigby Star;
  • Collins Big Cat;
  • POPS;
  • The use of ICT such as Clicker;
  • Guided Reading opportunities using Rigby Star;
  • Individual readers and library books;
  • Individual reading programmes which involves: object, picture and word matching activities.
